In 2006, the oldest members of the Baby Boomer generation began to turn 60. Today, there are 60 million Americans ages 55 and older; by 2030 that number will nearly double to 107.6 million.
This generation of American retirees is better educated, in better health and more financially secure than any previous generation. With broad-ranging talents, skills, experiences and passions, today's retirees have the wisdom, energy and know-how to change our world in meaningful and lasting ways.
The goal of the PrimeTime program is to register these highly-qualified retiree volunteers as PrimeTime Members and match them with specific volunteer opportunities that will make the most of their unique experiences and skills.

PrimeTime LAUSD is a partnership of the Los Angeles Unified School District and The Sherry Lansing Foundation. By strategically matching uniquely experienced retiree members with specific needs in Los Angeles public schools, PrimeTime LAUSD reaches and directly benefits more children and families than would be possible by any other means.
The PrimeTime programs were inspired by social entrepreneur Mark Freedman's book entitled
Prime Time: How Baby Boomers Will Revolutionize Retirement and Transform America. Freedman is the President of Civic Ventures, a San Francisco-based think tank dedicated to redefining the second half of life as a source of social and individual renewal. In 2007, Freedman released a new book,
Encore, about the new phase of work being invented by Baby Boomers: the Encore Career.
